Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I've never ridden a jet ski before, is it easy?

A: Yes. Our staff will provide complete and thorough instructions prior to your rental. We rent to thousands of "first timers" every year ranging from teenagers, to athletes, to seniors.

Q: Are jet skis stable, can they tip over?

A: Modern jet skis are very stable, you can stand on one side without flipping the jet ski over. Extra passengers may increase the risk of tipping over or falling off, but ultimately safe control rests with the driver.

Q: How old do you have to be to rent / drive a jet ski?

A: State law requires a person to be at least 18 years old to rent, 14 years old to operate, and passengers can be any age. Those born on or after Jan. 1st, 1988 may require a Flordia Boating Permit to drive. We can issue temporary permits at our location.

Q: What kind of jet skis do you rent?

A: Our current rental fleet consists of 2016 Yamaha VX Deluxe jet skis. With a HIGH OUTPUT engine and ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES such as reverse, mirrors, gauges, reboarding step and Yamaha's in RiDE traction control, this is not a common rental ski!

Q: How long have you been in business?

A: Our staff has a combined experience of over 40 years with jet ski rentals. American WaterSports has been operating from the same South Beach location, at Miami Beach Marina, since 2001.

Q: Do we have to wear life jackets?

A: Yes, life jackets are required by law and are provided with your rental at no extra charge. We have all sizes from infant to XXXL and everywhere in between.

Q: Can we switch drivers?

A: People on the same jet ski can switch from driver to passenger at any time throughout the rental. The skis are stable and this can be done very easily.

Q: What if I have a problem or need help?

A: Our ride zone is always monitored by our staff on their own jet ski to help and assist with any issues or questions. Our tour guides all carry waterproof phones and a safety box on every tour, and are never more than a whistle away at all times.

Q: How do I know when my time is up?

A: Our staff constantly monitors our ride zone for safety and will personally let you know when your time is up and assist in returning jet skis to the dock.

Q: Why can't I make a reservation?

A: Simply, because life happens. People run late, get stuck in traffic, change their minds, or for whatever reason don't show. By not accepting reservations we are able to keep more of our jet skis readily available for arriving customers. Our large fleet eliminates the need for reservations and keeps any wait times to a minimum, if at all. However, jet skis can be prepaid in person, at our location, to guarantee a later time and/or date.

Q: Why can't I check availability by phone?

A: Because we operate without reservations on a first pay, first go basis, we have no way of knowing how many people may arrive at any given time. Availability can change minute to minute as customers arrive and rent jet skis or as current rentals end. Telling somebody on the phone who is "5 minutes away" that two jet skis are available may not be the case 5 minutes later when they actually arrive.

Q: What is the best time to rent?

A: The earlier the better. Mornings start of slow and progressively get busier as the day goes on, with peak times early to late afternoon.

Q: How much do you charge for gas and tax?

A: Our regular rental rates, listed below, are per jet ski. Total price includes gas, taxes and tour guides. We guarantee the lowest rates in South Beach. Please see our specials page for current discounts and promotions.

1/2 Hr Ride Zone
1 HR Ride Zone
1 HR Tour
1.5 HR Tour
2 Hour Tour
EMT 1.5 Hour Tour

Q: How do you guarantee the lowest rates?

A:  If another licensed company in South Beach offers a lower rate using our same model jet skis, same year or newer, we will beat their advertised rate. Verification may be required.

Q: How much is the security deposit?

A: Security deposit is typically $500 per jet ski, accepted as cash or credit card authorization. One person may leave the security deposit for multiple jet skis within their group. Accommodations can be made for larger groups or under special circumstances.

Q: When is the security deposit returned?

A: Cash deposits are returned at the end of the rental. Credit card authorizations only verify funds are available and are not charges. The issuing bank will place a hold or "freeze" for the deposit amount and typically release it in one to three days. If necessary we can usually assist in an immediate release.

Q: How could I lose my security deposit?

A: 99% of our customers receive a full refund of their deposit. Deposit charges are usually the result of physical damages to the jet ski(s) caused by operator negligence. Using common sense, listening to instructions, operating safely, and maintaining safe distances are smart ways to ensure a fun yet safe jet ski rental with no unfortunate complications.

Q: Do you guys rock?

A: Yes, we do.
